Styling the Perfect Festival Looks this year - 2018 Trend

Is it that time of the year already? We love festival season; Bluesfest in Byron Bay has already come and gone and we were able to sneak a ticket to catch our idol Lauren Hill. Coachella over in California last month was next level with Beyoncé's set featuring Jay Z and Destiny’s Child (!!!!) absolutely slaying. And next up on the list, is Splendour in the Grass!

Splendour is one of the biggest music festivals of the year in Byron Bay - over the last couple years there have been some superstars, Queens of the Stone Age, The Cure, The Strokes, LCD Soundsystem, HAIM, Blur, Royal Blood and Bjorn playing across the many stages and locations across the festival site.

And this year is looking just as good - Kendrick Lamar, Lorde, Khalid, Vampire Weekend, Hilltop Hoods and The Wombats are only a few of the big names about to take to the stage end of July.

Here are our top festival styling, hair and make-up trends of 2018 inspired by 2018’s biggest fashion trends, what is happening in pop music and off course Coachella.

What’s happening?

A simplified version of the huge 90's trend that we've been seeing over the last couple years seems to be living on and maybe even making a serious comeback into our everyday wardrobes, We are channeling elements of the legendary girl groups of the late 90s Spice Girls, TLC and All Saints as well as the effortlessly cool supermodels Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford by putting together our go to styling tips ready for this year’s Splendour in the Grass 2018.

The amazing graduates from Huxley School of Make Up; Erin Leggat, Jessie Wells, Paula and Simmy Carr designed and constructed these amazing make up looks and hair styles right on trend and the team at Liar styled the looks sourcing pieces with Grace Bijoux, Fallen Broken Street, Projekt Glitter, Liberated Heart, Stay at Home Gypsy, Op Shopping and our new LIAR 'Star Girl' collection and vintage pieces.

Thank you to legends Josie, Hollie, Caroline, Simmy and Rose for being completely glittered up and modelling for this fun campaign xxx

Check out the slideshow below and beneath it a list of 90's trends that you must include in your festival styling this year;

GLITTER HAIR and PLAITS – Do you remember the glittery butterfly clips you fed through strands of hair back when you were 10 – well this is 2018 update of those sparkly days we loved and remember dearly. Glitter everywhere was and still is a thing and we are thrilled to know that Projekt Glitter gels and tubes are 100% biodegradable and sustainable. Shop Eco Glitter Now

CHAINMAIL – We have been seeing Grace Bijoux’s exquisite chain pieces everywhere and had to get some of the action! This trend has stepped right back into the spotlight this year, ever since Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell stepped out wearing Versace’s iconic statement chainmail dress back in the early 90s. Layer over a bikini or go with a bra for an effortless, undeniably cool look at this year’s festival scene.

BINDI’S – The cool alternative babes of the decade, Drew Barrymore and Gwen Stefani did the Bindi and space bun look so well! Inspired by the rave scene, this trend traced back to the  Bollywood samples and Ibiza dance culture of the 90s and we’ve seen bindi’s and stick on jewels make a huge come back.

ANDROGYNOUS HATS - We are obsessed with local Byron Bay brand, Fallen Broken Street’s androgynous hats, pair with glitter eyes and nails, a bandeau tube or white printed tee and you are bang on for this year’s festivals. Loving their khaki and black felts military inspired hats.

PRINTED TEES – Your staple star white tee or lilac tee is a must if you are more of the jeans and tee girls but add a little twist and tie to make it a crop and pair with a little rara skirt for Splendour and you are all set. Our star tee is so easy and the move on from the band and caption tees we saw in 2017.

BANDEAU'S – All the coolest celebs of 1999 wore Bandeau’s (aka boob tubes) – Destiny’s Child, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and TLC - under dungarees, as a crop top with baggy pants or with a tiny skirt and we have brought this back as reversible swimwear that you can use for the beach, instead of a bra or to layer under denim. BODY GLITTER - Body shimmers were a big thing when I was younger and I remember feeling the absolute coolest chick at the age of 11 rocking up to the end of year disco with my arms and legs covered with a simmer of gold glitter. So we are, without a doubt very excited that this trend is back. The Projekt Glitter colourful gels are perfect to add a little sparkle to your chest, arms, eyes, lips or hair.

RARA SKIRTS – I can’t believe I am wearing rara skirts over my treasured go-to denim shorts but this year I feel our simple 1 layer rara skirts are bringing that touch of femininity to my otherwise basic, minimalist androgynous wardrobe. Shop our Limited Edition Skirts Now.

FLORAL SEE THROUGH SLIP DRESSES OVER BIKINIS – Remember Kate Moss’s shimmery, slinky minimalist see through slip dresses in the 90’s worn over a little G-string – the number 1 90’s style idol. Our floral embroidered tulle slip dress is next level for 2018 and only 2 available as it is a limited edition piece – make sure you stay tuned on our Instagram for more transparent, minimalist slip dresses for sale this Summer.

SHIMMER EYESHADOW – This year we are seeing the 90s shimmer eyeshadow look go to the next level with bright, colourful glitters and shadows ….

BANTU KNOTS AND SPACE BUNS – Still happening. One of the best festival hair trends around, either tie multiple top knots or stick with space buns, but make sure you add a glitter to your parting.
