Lockdown or Groundhog Day - How to Keep Motivated

Australia has been in lockdown for around 6 long weeks now; what seemed like a never-ending March as we anxiously awaited news globally on when to start lockdown. As the world panic bought toilet paper, pasta sauce and hand sanitiser in despair and a level of anxiety hit work, study and ‘normal life,’- we began to ease into our new life in lockdown for the unforeseeable future.

Then came April wizzing right before our eyes, the world working out on virtual Instagram videos, starting those hobbies we always wanted to start but never found the time (gardening, painting, baking sourdough bread,) and getting in the swing of working from home (WFH).

And now, as May begins, we are brimming with anticipation of seeing the finishing line from afar.

The last few weeks have felt like a surreal scene in a zombie apocolypse, walking the deserted street, searching for bread on the empty supermarket shelves and social distancing from our family and besties for everyones safety.

To be fair, we have had it pretty easy in comparison to our movie counterparts, where all we need to do is stay inside until this virus curve flattens and the world looks safe to resume normality.

But as we continue - the excitement of the social distancing lockdown is flailing and getting up and motivated to workout virtually, continue our newfound hobbies and stay away from mates is feeling more and more like Groundhog Day.

What can we do to keep ourselves upbeat in the last hurdle?

Here are a few of our suggestions to keep you all from spiralling into a Candy Crush despair, eating an entire packet of family sized Cheese and Onion Smiths daily, binge watching all the rom coms on Netflix and scrolling Instagram endlessly and watching all the motivational fitness videos whilst scoffing said Smiths Bag of Chips.

We are going to give these a go for the next few weeks starting tomorrow but if you have anymore ideas, drop a comment below - we are excited to try new things.

  1. Routine is number one - get up early, drink a glass of lemon water, go for a walk or do some fitness, get a coffee, shower and get dressed as if you are leaving the house to work or school. This will start your day right and get you ready and motivated to succeed in what you need to do with your day.

  2. Delete Candy Crush and all the mind numbing games on phone, switch off insta and tic tock after work or studying, then put down said phone for the rest of the evening.

  3. Relax and read that book you have on your shelf, spend a couple hours learning a new skill or make something delicious that you have never made before.

  4. Zoom, Skype or Houseparty - get your mates together or reconnect to an old friend for a Friday night virtual wine, trivia or cocktail party. Make an effort to dress up and put some make up for a night out - in!

  5. Australia restriction are starting to ease, (minimally) but we are meeting up with one friend now and then and going for a beach or park walk and a coffee - fitness -tick, social catch up - tick, coffee fix - tick!

  6. Stop buying snacks and make something healthy and delicious - we started so well making good meals but that has since resided into easy pizzas, chips and burgers. We have a handful recipes on our blog - try our Vegan Rice and Dhal or Our Peanut Butter Choc Smoothie. Minimalist Baker has some amazing recipes that taste and delicious - try the Roasted Cauliflour and seriously yum Chipotle Romesco sauce.

  7. Get some Sunshine - number one happiness factor comes down to vitamin D and the easiest and cheapest is to sit outside for like 10-30 mins at peak sun time.

  8. Water - I hate being told to drink water but also super bad at actually drink enough each day. If you are feeling low energy and drained, it might just be low water intake. Start the day with a big glass of lemon water when you get up then keep it up all day - it is recommended you need roughly eight 8-ounce glasses a day. When you reach for that Tim Tam, drink a big glass of water instead!

  9. Make a plan - this is an amazing opportunity to kickstart that hobby you began, learn a new skill and streamline your future plans especially in this rocky career climate. But see it as a positive to refresh your work/life priorities and make a good go at what you have been dreaming of doing. Just write down a couple of ideas you’d like to achieve and start chipping away at them over the next few months.
