A Simple Guide to going Vegan - Part 1 - Food


We having been talking to inspirational fashion student Marianne Trewern over in Falmouth, UK who runs an amazing and inspirational Instagram page @lazyandvegan full of easy vegan recipes for ' busy, broke students.'

Studying at Falmouth University in Cornwall, Marianne is an animal lover sharing real truths about animal cruelty, her opinions and her ethical and vegan lifestyle.

She has created a simple 3 part guide to going vegan and is sharing basic and easy tips to get you started.


The easiest way of educating yourself about the realities of animal agriculture and animal exploitation is to see it for yourself. The truth's are all kept hidden and as much as you don't want to see a how your piece of steak or chicken actually arrives neatly packaged on your supermarket's shelf - it is worth knowing where the food you eat comes from.  

Documentaries such as; Land Of Hope And Glory, Cowspiracy, Earthlings, Seaspiracy and What The Health all tackle a wide range of issues, and all have their own websites with a lot of information where you can read and fact check their sources for yourself.

Getting Started:

Challenges such as Challenge 22+ are brilliant for starting out, once you have signed up you receive nutritional advice and support as well as information and recipes for free!

Finding people who inspire and motivate you can be really encouraging, and there are so many amazing people who share their stories online such as animal rights activists like @earthlinged, @joey_carbstrong or @jamesaspey (who all have Facebook, YouTube, Instagram pages) or food blogs such as @mymeatlessmeals (on YouTube and Instagram) and @vegan.han.

It is also worth asking family and friends to see if anyone else is interested in veganism!


The easiest way to convert is taking your existing meals and replace the non-vegan ingredients with vegan substitutes! You will find that most supermarkets will offer these, and the cost tends to be lower in most cases!

If you are after some fresh new meals, you can get recipe inspiration from Pinterest, vegan blogs, a good old Google search, Instagram and YouTube, or buy cook books (although, personally I find it really isn’t necessary to spend money on finding recipes as there is endless recipes and information out there!)

Look at lists on Viva and Peta for treats and accidental non-vegan food, and The Vegan Society Nutritional Overview for precise nutritional information.

Start your own blog on Instagram or even write a list and keep it handy to keep track of your favourite vegan products and recipes and to build up a vegan menu and recipe rotation, and is a great way to see if you could do with eating more or less of one food type!

For special dietary requirements: Look at which of the vegan substitutes are suitable for you and which aren’t. Are there any alternatives for the ones that aren’t? If you are feeling restricted, there are other resources out there. For example, for those that are gluten-free, see the vegan section at Simply Gluten Free or the gluten free section at The Vegan Society. The vegan society also has articles for those with soy and nut allergies and more. Plus, research your own vegan bloggers and vloggers with special diets on Google and YouTube - there are so many amazing, influential vegan's to find!


Do your own research! Through the websites mentioned, there will be tonnes of information, however sometimes a simple Google search is helpful if you’re ever unsure!

Buy your fruit and vegetables seasonally and locally wherever possible.

If you can, buy your dry foods from plastic free shops, and buy your fruit and vegetables loose!

Always look out for palm oil in products and snacks and try and avoid it!

Freeze your leftover vegetables for another day!

Stock up on tins!

Check that your favourite food snacks aren’t already vegan (a lot of stuff is!)

Don’t forget that just like real meat, meat substitutes such as fillets and chunks may also need a little seasoning! Have a good herbs/spices collection! I recommend always having plenty of; salt, pepper, curry powder, chilli powder, oregano, rosemary (and garlic!)

Don’t be worried about eating out! The majority of cafes and restaurants have vegan menu's. If you cannot access their menu online, call ahead and ask!

Any of the resources that I have recommended will vary in nutritional content, and it is for you to do your own research, choose your own recipes and see what you believe is best for you, your lifestyle and health!
